Children’s rights are at the heart of our family policy

SDP wants to build Finland into the best country in the world for children and families. In 2021, Finland got its first national Child Strategy in accordance with Marin's Government Programme. Its implementation has begun successfully. Now we must make sure that the implementation continues nationally and in all sectors of government.

Poverty weakens the wellbeing of children and families, and that is why it is essential to break the inheritance of deprivation and intergenerational social exclusion. Ensuring adequate means for families with children and reducing poverty in families with children must be prioritised in developing social security.

We will raise the single parent supplement of the child benefit and the child maintenance allowance significantly. This would lift tens of thousands of children out of poverty.

Shared residence will be made easier. Social security should take into account that a child in shared residence generates more costs than a child living in one home. Shared residence support should also cover transport services from both homes of the child.

Also the child benefit system and the Child Maintenance Allowance Act must be reformed to take into account the fact that family situations have become more varied. It is seen to that the child benefit remains a support that makes up for the expenses of a child to all families with children, and that the level of the benefit is maintained.
